The Hall of Fame
These players are some of the best players ever to play for the sharks. They are nominated by the sharks during their final season, and their inclusion is voted on at the Old Boys Weekend. If the motion is passed they are then entered into the Hall of Fame. These players are recognised for their commitment, ability and all round contribution to the UCH Sharks.
Eligibility Requirements for entry into the Hall Of Fame
1 - Applicants must have played for at LEAST 2 seasons.
2 - Applicants must be one of the STANDOUT players of the team.
3 - Applicants must have shown dedication to the team, and exhibited a good attitude.
Players are proposed for membership in the following way. The players is nominated by the Current Sharks committee members before the Old Boys game in January each year. A short outline as to why they should be included in the hall of fame should be prepared. This should include achievements such as All-Star teams, international honours, team leader in tackles, etc. A vote is then taken with all players and Whales attending the Old boys/Sharks AGM, for inclusion they must gain 70% of all votes.
John Osibote (LB: No.51) 1985-88
Linebacker extraordinaire, perhaps the one Whale that strikes fear in to the hearts of those who know him and have had to play against him. His key attributes are lightning quickness,
tackles like a ba****d, can't be blocked, great hands (also played a mean FB), oh, and even once intercepted a pitchout. As if John wasn't scary enough, he's also a copper in the Met.
Maurice Newton (RB/FS: No.37) 1984-87
Moz has the distinction of being unquestionably the Sharks/Whales best RB ever, playing for his country on a number of occasions. Moz has the moves, the speed and the power to run past, thro' and over his opponents. In his twilight years he has taken to playing a bit of D, and the giggling hitman has certainly taken a few scalps from there. The Whales' 'Mr Nice Guy'.
Dan Shirley (DE: No.42) 1984-87
For years Dan was the leading sacker of whichever senior league was running, and always brought that form to Oldboys games down the years. Not only skilled at his chosen position, Dan was an adept Centre, and relished embarrassing his RBs by beating them out on the pulling sweep.
Martin Rye (LB: No.52) 1991-94
Whilst being possibly the laziest Shark to don the green & white, Martin made up for his lack of knowledge of the plays ('Am I blitzing on this play?') by his lightning speed, tenacity and sheer bone-crunching hitting ability.
Steve Chad (CB: No.85) 1990-93
Whilst small in stature, Steve is one of the best cover DBs ever to play for the Sharks/Whales, and shows a reckless lack of concern for his bodily wellbeing when throwing himself in to tackles. As well as his on-field prowess - he has stolen the show at several OBW games - he has also become the unofficial mascot for the OBW, with his costumes, dancing and pulling power now legendary.
Colin Hancock (RB: No.2) 1990-93
Hub of the rushing game during his time at Hull - his performances seeing him on to the first Allstar team in 1993 - Colin as President also insituted a number of long-standing traditions which remain to this day - the yearbook, the jackets, and the plate tournament. Since graduation he has been instrumental in the development of the OBW in to its current incarnation.
Andy Hill (LB: No.55) 1992-93
Despite only being a Shark for one year, Andy made an impact beyond his tenure. His partnership with Martin Rye made the middle unbreachable, and his ability to take on linemen galore freed up the front for his fellow 'backers to pile up the sacks. Andy's calibre shone through in his playing semi pro and making it to the final cut for the NFL Europe London Monarchs.
Nick Chadwick (LB: No.55) 1993-96
The year after Andy Hill graduated Nick stepped in to the middle. Same number. Same approach to the game. Same effect. Loud and brash on the pitch, Nick's play meant he more than talked the talk, this boy walked the walk.
James Kingsland (G/DT: No.99) 1989-92
Not only was James a mainstay of the O-line for his years at Hull as well as being a rock in the middle of the D-line, James, as President, also brought the Sharks through a potentially crap 1991 season, with only 7 returning players available. Instead of folding, James' Sharks enjoyed reasonable success on the pitch and unrivalled success off it!
Conor Costigan (OL/DL: No.63) 2000-02
Conor was voted BCAFL Lineman of the year, Sharks Overall & players’ player of the year in 2001-02. Well liked and respected by everyone on the team, Conor excelled both at D-End and at Centre. Conor was also voted onto the All college team during the 01-02 season. Conor helped coach the Sharks during the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons, sacrificing a great deal of his own time to help the Sharks improve as a team.
Victor Choi (RB/WR: No.28) 2000-03
Victor led scoring for the Sharks in the last 2 out of his 3 years as a Shark. Years in which the Sharks set their two highest EVER scoring seasons. He also holds the second highest number of TD’s in a single season. He is currently the Sharks All-time leading TD scorer with 21 TD’s. A supreme athlete, who made over 400 yards offensively in 2002-03 season alone, and often made plays from nothing with his quickness and agility. Victor worked hard for his success and deserved every TD he got. Victor's work ethic in the gym will probably never be surpassed.
Richard "Crowbar" Cochrane (RB/FB: No.18) 2000-04
Rich played FB for 3 years, a largely gloryless position, yet he still managed to shine. At the end of his first year, Rich was named Rookie of the Year; in his third year, he was named Overall MVP and Players Player. In his final year with the Sharks, Rich moved position to RB, where he continued to approach games with the same ’never say die attitude’ that he had previously displayed at FB. He was the Sharks leading rusher and receiver that season, and went on to achieve national recognition by being named to the BCAFL All-College 1st Team. Rich’s importance to the Sharks Offence that year was never shown better than by the sheer number of people in and around the league that simply said ’keep giving it to 18’.
‘Strength of the bear baby; Power of ten!’
Cathy Jackson (Cheerleader/OBW guru)
Without Cath the OBW wouldn't be what it is today, so reliable was she in not only taking on the onerous task of sorting things out but also in doing such a fine job. 'Mama Whale' is arguably everyone's favourite Oldgirl.
